Atelier Šunčík?
Every creator eventually has to reflect on the name of their brand. The pragmatic ones simply (and wisely) reach for their own surname and leave it at that. The others are doomed to search for a title that represents them — and to face the public verdict on whether their choice succeeds. Atelier Šunčík is a kind of fusion of both approaches, and it’s asking for trouble. Because if you decide to name your brand after the nickname your family teasingly uses at home, you either end up running a pub in a holiday cottage settlement — or you just assume you can get away with anything. But perhaps there’s another option. Until recently, the founder of the brand, David Ševčík, was “Šunčík” only behind closed doors. Just like he was a maker of ceramics, drawings, texts, and visual concepts only in private. Opening those doors meant embracing both: the decision to mark the work into which he pours his most personal self with a name that is intimate, and admittedly a little comical. For Czech audiences, no further explanation is needed. Once this page goes into another language, however, some complications are bound to arise. Welcome to Atelier Šunčík!
