The Talking Forest
Shall we agree to call it a COLLECTION? The very first collection of ceramic objects bearing the Atelier Šunčík logo was put together to hint at the themes close to my heart. One of them is a simplified, illustration-like form through which I create figures of cats, ghosts, and other such characters — a kind of caricature translated into three dimensions. The second theme reflects my fascination with the unintentionally comic appearance of animals portrayed by artists of the Gothic and Renaissance periods. These were works by creators who knew their subjects only from hearsay. Perhaps they caught a glimpse of the animal for a brief moment as it flickered between trees or over the water’s surface. A lion painted by someone who had only ever seen a sheep. Lacking perspective and anatomical knowledge, they nevertheless brought to life marvelous beings on canvases, tapestries, and church facades. With human features, cylindrical torsos, and knees bending in every possible direction. And it is precisely such pseudo-sharks, almost-tigers, and monkeys that look like the lady next door that I decided to continue creating — because in today’s world of facts and information, their distorted reality is sorely missing.
