A candleholder in the shape of a cat’s head, made of light clay and decorated with blue engobe and a transparent glaze. A single-candle holder was once a household essential — ready to accompany you anywhere (yes, even to the bathroom) and bring a small circle of gentle light in which you might sit and think, enjoy a late dinner, or read Grass’s satire Cat and Mouse. If there is such a thing as a “standard candle size,” that’s exactly the one that fits into the cat, set a bit deeper to hold securely in place.
